Google releases Page Speed

Google released one of its internal optimization tools, Page Speed (thx Joel).

Similar to YSlow, it looks pretty cool. I noticed immediately that it helps to identify unused CSS selectors (something I’m always wanting to clean up). I downloaded it and ran it on Dexo Design and here is a screenshot of the results:

New color tool in beta: ColoRotate

Michael Douma notified me of a new color tool he and his colleagues have been working on.

From Michael:

“Since color is inherently three dimensional, it’s always bothered us that all color pickers are flat. That led to the design ColoRotate, a 3D editor that aligns with the way our minds process color. We’ve also put together some background information about the nature of color, perception, and color models — http://learn.colorotate.org/

ColoRotate is a free online service that has some similarities to Adobe Kuler, but is different in that it’s in 3D. Users can browse color palettes, create new palettes, and share palettes with others in the ColoRotate community. This fall, we’ll be launching ColoRotate as a CS4 plugin.”

The formation of this role elevates the importance of design within our company and further communicates to the industry the growing need for design leadership in software development. It is my belief that senior and executive level design positions will be standard roles in software organizations within the next 5-10 years.
